Every live build comes down to the same question at every hop: how do I get this signal there, cleanly, at the length I actually have? SDI, HDMI, NDI, and fiber each solve that differently. None of them is “best.” They’re tools with different trade-offs. Here’s the honest breakdown.
Distance is usually the first thing that eliminates an option. Rough working numbers on quality cable:
Engineer’s note: the single most common field mistake is running 12G-SDI too far on cable rated for 3G. The picture looks fine on the bench and drops out under load. Match the cable rating to the actual signal, and leave margin.
For live switching, latency has to be effectively zero and, more importantly, consistent.
If you’re cutting a live show frame-accurately, baseband (SDI/fiber) removes an entire class of “why is this source late” problems. If you’re doing corporate AV, a house of worship, or multi-room distribution, NDI’s latency is usually a non-issue.
How a format fails matters as much as how it performs:
You almost never pick one. A typical live build is: cameras out on fiber for the long runs, converted to SDI at the truck/rack for switching and distribution, HDMI at the last foot into a laptop or a monitor, and NDI bridging graphics, a second control room, or an overflow feed across the network. The engineer’s job is the conversion points — getting from one format to the next without adding latency, losing sync, or dropping the audio embed.
